As a parent, you want your child to feel confident, happy and successful in their learning. Whether they need a little boost, are preparing for SATs or simply need support in a subject they find tricky - finding the right tutor can make all the difference. With so many options out there, how do you choose the best one?
Here are some key things to consider:
1. Look for a Qualified and Experienced Tutor
A great tutor doesn’t just know the subject - they know how to teach it. For primary-aged children, someone with classroom experience and knowledge of the National Curriculum is invaluable. Qualified teachers understand how children learn at different ages and how to tailor sessions to suit everyone.
2. Consider Your Child’s Needs
Think about what your child would benefit from most:
1:1 attention or small group interaction?
Support in a specific subject like Maths or Reading?
Help catching up, building confidence or stretching further?
A good tutor will take time to understand these needs and plan accordingly.
3. Check for DBS and Safeguarding
Your child’s safety comes first. Make sure the tutor has an up-to-date DBS check and follows safe, professional practices - especially if working in person or online. Reputable tutors will always be happy to provide this.
4. Ask About Their Approach
Every tutor has a slightly different style. Look for someone who:
Builds positive relationships
Uses praise and encouragement
Adapts lessons to your child’s pace
Gives regular updates or feedback
Children learn best when they feel relaxed, supported and understood.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
A good tutor will welcome your questions. Ask about:
Experience with your child’s age group
Availability and flexibility
How they plan and review sessions
What materials or resources they use
You could even ask to observe part of a trial session or speak to other parents.
6. Trust Your Instincts
Most importantly, go with what feels right for your child. If they come out of a session smiling, proud of what they’ve done and keen to go back - you’ve probably found a great match.
